Chez Shea, a disappointment

"What a disappointment. After reading the reviews and looking at the tasting menu I was really looking forward to a white linen establishment and having a relaxed three hour meal.

I made a reservation in advance but the only thing they said they had available was at 8:45 on a Friday for the dining room. Having heard about the view I request for a window seat.

Well the first strike was when we got there at 8:45 as an other couple without a reservation arrived and was told our table wasn't ready since another party had stayed longer. We waited at the bar where it took a good ten minutes for the barman who told us to wait to stop empty the dishwasher and take our drink order.

We finally got seated almost 20 minutes later and guess what, no window seat and in a dining room with only 20 tables four of them were empty and no one had left since we arrived.

It was 9:15 before we even got our drinks and we had to ask for bread which the server dropped on the floor.

We kept trying to have a good time and usually I try to just focus on the food but a big part of why we picked this place was because of the atmosphere and the style. I did love how quiet and intimate the space was and the wall of windows looking out over the pier and water. Maybe if the food had been exceptional it would have made the poor service less memorable. But the food while very nice was not special except for the dessert.

The menu:
we started with oysters with two vinagrettes, one was a mango one and one a garlic, they were lovely, raw and slid down our throats, the vinaigrette enhanced the oyster own fresh taste. What made the dish good was the quality of the oysters and not the vinagrettes.

For the second course the wife had a salmon tar tare which was small and not that interesting with a short stack of flat bread alternating with salmon tar tare and salmon roe on top. My second course was great, seared Foie Gras, a smaller piece then I was expecting but seared to perfection. It was served on an apple tart which I know they put on it for the contrast of the flavors but the tart should have been more well tart than sweet and I ended up eating the separately. Again what made the dish so good was the Foie Gras and not the whole dish.

For our entrees I had the duck confit that was far from the best I've had (the best in Seattle being at Crave). My sides of french beans and green were horrible. I literally couldn't eat them, the greens were tough and the beans weren't fully cooked. The wife had a chanterelle and chevre herbed crepe that was good but as she said not exceptional. For dessert the chocolate cake was like one big luscious truffle. It was really exceptional and if it was made in house, the pasty chef is a star.

The total without drink or tip was 120.

My wife had the idea that the lackluster service was based on her appearance since she has a Mohawk and prefers hoodies and combat boots to dresses and she said that she has had bad service in the Northwest before based on her appearance. I had also checked to see if there was jacket requirement. I really hope that was not the case because we have had great service at 3 star Michelin restaurants where she was dressed as she usually does. A true white linen restaurant treats ever diner like they are a special guest."

Le Gourmand

When we first arrived, there was one other couple - who looked as though they had been married for quite a long time - elderly with little conversation. Their second course arrived when we sat down and the noises that were coming from that corner of the restaurant were unfortunately not drowned out by the music. The man kept making long "Ooooh ahhhhh grunt!" noises and it sounded so much like he was screwing his entree and he wanted EVERYONE in the restaurant to watch his wrinkled 60 yr old ass that it almost put me off my meal. Luckily they were finished before our appetizer arrived however and thankfully smoking is not permitted because I was totally expecting him to light up after his orgy. (I mean seriously, if you're going to pretend to be a gourmet try to act with some manners and don't be pretentious about it. I have lots of things to say about so-called "gourmets" who think they know food just because they can make cheeseball basil pesto, but I'll save this rant for everyone another time. :))

Some things I have to say about the food/service though:

Prices are $35-55 an entree but include the appetizer. This way they guarantee selling enough food but the customer gets their money's worth too. Not a great thing if you're on a diet but you shouldn't come to a this restaurant if you're on a diet anyway. Expect to take in about 2-3000 calories in one sitting - most of it in dairy/saturated fat from cream, butter, meat or shellfish. Luckily most Seattlites are skinny enough to cope with this and we're not in the midwest.

So, coming from a franco-italian cuisine background where escalope of veal in a marsala and mushroom, cream sauce was something my mum forced us to eat as children (one never really appreciates food as a child - no matter how good!), going to Le Gourmand was a bit like going home or back in time to my childhood in my mum and dad's restaurant. So I was rather taken aback after our excellent meal when I realized at 2am that I was suffering from palpitations and stomach cramps. It took me a few hours to realize I had indigestion from the extra extra supra rich food! (And some antacid took care of that - I think I've only had indigestion a few times in my life though!)

The proprietors are both chefs - the family run atmosphere is great but only really evident when the chefs have time to come out of the kitchen to chat with you, which was a delightful change to the usual Seattle snobbiness. The potential for more of a family run atmosphere may be replaced by having more people in the restaurant on busier or festive nights, however - we had gone on a very slow Thursday. Otherwise the upfront service was really good, attentive, polite and pleasant, but boring. It's asking a lot from waitstaff to connect with everyone and it takes a certain charisma to be able to do that - this I appreciate. So that's all that was missing from our experience - a proprietor upfront in the restaurant - and who else would cook the excellent food?

I had moules as an appetizer - really excellent.
The hubby had the little cheese-pastry things (which were a little plain to me) but good otherwise.
For entree hubby had the lamb - which was very good but again not my style.
I had the duck. It's quite difficult to make sure the duck is crispy and have a nice sauce with it, and it's not often that people pair duck with a fungi cream sauce, so it was a nice change from all the fruity sweet ducks I have had in my life (and that's quite a few - <quack>), but the sauce was really perfect - really. Mild but with a fungal sweetness that did compliment the duck - and later I could smell the porcini on my fingers all night - it really was like good sex that you can smell on you for hours afterwards, that makes you not want to shower for a while.

Having the salad after the entree was odd and I thought it was a touch pretentious. I was so full too there just did not seem to be any point. I was expecting the vinaigrette to be on a par with the sauces.

The wine at times fantastic - there are many choices by the glass - all really excellent.

All in all, Le Gourmand is a snapshot of elegant excellence and it's nice to know that it's there if I ever have a hunkering for rich saucy food.
This is what excellent food was in the 70's and 80's. Food has moved on since then - this really traditional french approach is considered passe, but then again it's hard to find Gordon Ramsey in Seattle, and if you really want to treat yourself, go here - it's really not as expensive as everyone says because you would pay that much at any other restaurant anyway if you had the appetizers.

Food: 9.5 out of 10
Wine: 10 out of 10
Service: 9 out of 10
Atmosphere: 5 out of 10 (on a quiet night)

Wow. Speaking of good experiences. I went to Crave last week, and had one of the best dinners there that I have had in a long time.

I had the steak (I forget what kind), but it was a nice big steak on top of a generous helping of blue-cheese mashed potatoes and sauteed green beans.

Awesome. Really.

The person I was with had the gnocci, and it also was outstanding. Very big, very heavy - but good.

I'd suggest it anytime.

2331 2nd Ave • Seattle, Washington 98121 • (206) 441-9842

The visit there was unexpected. or at least unplanned on my part. A thought it would be a fun outing given that it was my birthday and she had read a good review of the place.

Situated in Belltown, parking is potentially always a problem and you certainly are unlikely to find any for free. We arrived a few minutes are Seven, a little later than we should have been but anyhow. The crowds had not quite picked up yet and we entered into a narrow room adjoined by an enclosed courtyard with a few tables shaded by some trees. The ambience is European sophisticated with an eclectic mix of Southern Asia and Americana. The bar is right near the door but we didn't stop there. The room was dress out with fresh flowers. roses and lilies with a great smell that assailed you as you entered. Lighting is dim, to fit the venue. The tables are a little close together and jammed in well, with possibilities for two or more aplenty. The menu was broad with a keynote plantain fries plate but they are renowned for a mystery 5 course tasting menu for $45. We opted for this with me taking a flite of accompanying wines.

Our server was very attentive, as were the others including the waterboy. Overhearing the presentation to the other patrons, it was clear that the servers were well rehearsed in the 5 course mystery line up. We started with a tremendous heirloom tomato soup lake surrounding a large grilled scallop. This was followed by a frisée Lactuca crispa lettuce salad with bacon pieces and a raspberry vinaigrette followed by a apricot-like sorbet. The entrée was small venison T bone on a bed of cauliflower florets and zucchini - delicious, though we did discover that one side of the T was a little tougher than the other - odd... Dessert was a chocolate gateau with walnut praline on the top dipped in chocolate - delish! Expensive but I would go again.

I don't know how I could have lived here for almost 10 years and have just now tried Paseo (on Fremont Ave between 42nd and 43rd). OH MY GOODNESS! So good! I'm a sandwich fan so these cuban sandwiches were amazing. Actually, the sandwiches were so good that I didn't even get one (they were out by 6:30pm last night). We got what we would had in a sandwich as a platter instead (grilled pork and roasted pork shoulder) and it was soooooooo good! I could only imagine how good it would have been in a sandwich. While we were eating we talked about our favorite sandwich shops and where we would go if we did a sandwich tour. Here's our picks (and my recommended sammich) in no particular order:

Honey Hole (waverider or chachi)
Thanh Vi (charbroiled pork or chicken)
Philly Cheesesteak (the one on 23rd and Union - the cheesesteak, of course!)
Tat's (tatstrami)
Fish fry stand in Pike's Place by the flowers and you can sit at the counter around the kitchen (blackened catfish)
Subs on the Ave (anything with the sweet dark rye)
Aladdin's Gyrocery on the Ave (spanikopita pita)
Salumi (can't remember what I had, but it was good!)
Baguette Box (drunken chicken or house cured salmon lox)
Saigon Deli and Buu Dien (banh mi - standard coldcuts or nem nuong)
Sheila's in Uwajimaya food court (spicy korean pork)

Did I miss anything? What's your favorite sammich spot?

A Chinese friend mentioned he'd been told that a restaurant in Bellevue had changed hands and now served what he called "Chinese Country Food". That seemed to mean to him that the food is like what his mom used to cook. He knew I'd like it, so we went back for the same thing he'd had a couple of days before.

Its The Lucky Garden, just North of Main on Bellevue Way, the site of the old IHOP. Still has weird carpet going up the wall from the floor, but here's the hot tip: Ask for the Rice Hot Pot thats NOT on the menu. They cook the rice and whatever the choices are for the day in a pottery bowl. Yummy! We had mushrooms, chopped up chicken, complete with bones and topped with Chinese sausage. I think they also had spare ribs, but that may change daily. It takes 20 minutes to cook, so be prepared to wait a bit. They served it with a bowl of soysauce infused with ginger. TASTY. We also had something good which I've never had before, called Pea Vine with Garlic. Its a lot like spinach. A little pricier than the typical ID fare, but definitely worth the taste treat if you happen to be in Bellevue and are lost for where to get something good.
Well, I'd vote for Jamjuree on 15th, but I hear that there's a great place in Lower Queen Anne in a little house or storefront that is really good.

And, no one say Thai Tom on the Ave. That's Khow San Rd. stall food - tasty perhaps, but not quite up to snuff. Or, up to phat thai as it were.

Breakfast Buffet?

Besides Salti's (which I've heard is iffy and way overpriced) is there a decent breakfast buffet in Seattle? Any other city, I can find hundreds, but everwhere I search for one here comes up with nothing, Salti's, or nothing!

I want sausage, bacon, pancakes, waffles, french toast, a carving station, omelet station, etc. I would even be willing to pay too much money for it if I knew it was good. Oh, and it has to be somewhere between Northgate and the south end of Downtown, and reachable by bus... though I might be able to find someone with a car if I could convince them that it would be excellent and worth their time.

Thanks!

Canton Wonton House

After finishing, yet another, delicious bowl of wonton noodle soup tonight I thought to myself "why don't more people know about this place?" So here I am letting ya'll know if you didn't already. Canton Wonton is sooooooooooo good, not to mention incredibly cheap ($13 for two of us with chinese donuts and sodas). It's always packed for lunch during the week (I used to work down the street) and it's generally dead at night so don't let the lack of people scare you if it's not bustling.

If you've never had wonton soup before there's a couple things to know. Definitely add some chinese red vinegar and some sweet chili paste (they're both on the table) to the broth. You should also order chinese donut, which isn't really a donut, but more of a savory, deepfried spongy dough that is sliced into bite size pieces - hard to describe so here's a picture: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/27/98914175_6aa71750b5.jpg?v=0 You then dip the chinese donut in the wonton soup, letting it soak up the yummy broth, and then eat it! YUM!!!! Every person I've taken there is at first apprehensive (it's a bit of a dive, but not dirty - just incredibly stripped down and bare), but then they have some of the soup and they're sold!

Canton Wonton House: 608 S Weller St - across the street/kitty corner to Uwajimaya in the ID.

New *GREAT* Indonesian

Padi, 5004 University Way NE, just North of 50th On the East side of the street.

I've always loved Indonesian food and finally there's a good, consistent restaurant. I've eaten there 3 times now and my last meal was the best. Its not really like Thai food, although you'll find peanut sauce (I like the Indonesian variety better) and saté. I'm not sure who can lay claim to the origins of saté, but I think its a Javanese word (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satay).

Nothing was killer hot, but some were definitely spicey and they typically aren't served in varying degrees of hotness. I suspect if you ask, they'll go easy, but many dishes are special and take days to prepare in advance. I've had the whole fish, which is sort of deep fried, and sounds much greasier than it is. I shared one with my date and we loved it. Tonight, Shaun & I had Campur Goreng (pronounced Champur Goreng) which is a variety of veggies & meats served over rice; A bit like a sampler, and we had noodles with Javanese style sauce. Both were great.

There are quite a few choices on the menu, plus some daily specials. We tried a small portion of the grilled fish in banana leaves that we really liked too.

I think the tastes and variety are subtler than Thai food. Definitely a bit more adventuresome too. The 2 entres were around $7 or $8, so our total bill was under $20.

I loved it. Check it out and let us know what you think!

La Isla - Puerto Rican food

Yum! We just had lunch there (it's in Ballard, on Market St where the Australian pot pie place used to be). Delish! Although I think we overdid it on the fried foods. I haven't had good fried plantains since visiting Costa Rica so I was very happy that there was a sampler plate with 3 different kinds - the garlic lime "mojito" dip was very good too. The cod fish cakes were good, but too rich for me. It tasted like the batter for fish and chips, but there was no fish inside (the cod is shredded and mixed into the batter). Next time I'll try an entree, like the two small pork chops grilled in adobo. It sounded good, but I was craving something fatty and deep fried, which I now regret (I'm too full and feeling the greasiness in my head and stomach). I liked the shredded pork in the empanadillas, but I wasn't impressed by the flaky crust.

Anyone else eaten there? Is it authentic? I've never been to Puerto Rico so I can't say, but it was definitely tasty. I wish I knew ahead of time about the happy hour - it looks like the best deal. $2 on almost all the appetizers, which start at $4 normally.

Howdy.

I feel compelled to promote my favorite Vietnamese in town, Da Lat, at the very north end of the Broadway strip, next to the gas station.

Da Lat has fantastic food, a very pleasant atmosphere, and the price is right. If you check it out, try the bun (vermicelli noodle salad). It's delightful.
Yes, the taco bus on Ranier is damned good. I mean, the menu is actually all the pictures on the walls. In Spanish no less!

Good stuff.

Five chicken real tacos? Five bucks. And, they have some other really cool dishes that are about the same price but better. Of course, I'm a standard American mongolot, so I have no idea what they are called, but they looked damned good.

Just a bit past Lowe's on Ranier on the west side of the street.

Seriously - it's a white bus.

Not only is the service beyond anything that I've seen in Seattle in...well, forever, but it is some damned good food.

We had a pulled, fresh mozzarella for an app (fucking great), and for dinner I had the beet risoto. Yeah - I know, risoto, shinoso. BUT! It was damned good. And it was a really freaky red color.

And, it's super cheap.

Ha. Just kidding. It's not cheap. At all. Not a bit.

Saturday night but even with a reservation they made a 77 year old woman who just got off the plane from UK (and therefore who had been up for 20 hours) wait on her feet for 30 mins. My poor Auntie Mari nearly collapsed. There was no effort made to look after her even when I enquired for a chair.

I know they want to put their good looking waitresses on the front desk but please find staff with some consideration for clients ffs, and perhaps some brains too if it's not too much to ask.

Food was mediocre - tasted ok but arrived overcooked yet not very warm.
Husband had ordered a filet mignon. The cut was not filet mignon nor tenderloin by any stretch of the imagination. It had been ordered medium rare and arrived over-cooked.

My crab stuffed salmon was also overcooked and stodgy.
Yes - you definitely pay for the view here even though we didn't have one, and my poor Auntie Mari was left standing for 30 mins waiting for our reserved table. (we arrived on time too!).

For some reason they serve mainly local wines. Not knowing local wines too well, we asked the waiter for his recommendation and he didn't have a clue.

Will never go here again.

Ok, now that I'm out of the "City of Destiny" and working right smack in the middle of downtown Seattle (across the street from the Seattle Library), where are some good but inexpensive lunch places?

Kam ought to know a bunch of them!

Where's the best buffet? I went to a good one last week on Roosevelt around 45th on the West side of the street, and the food at the place at Pike and .......Belmont? Boylston? was pretty damn good too.

Oh - the Tibetan place on Broadway, just south of Denny is really, really good. Go. Go often, and get the Momo's. Great food, nice people.

Well, it's finally time that we can get a great veggie sandwich on the 'Hill.

There's this place called The Cafe, that's between Thomas and Harrison on 15th that has - from what I have tried - fantastic veggie sandwiches. The kind that even meat eaters would love.

Come check it out. Seriously - it's good.

Bloody Excellent.

We shared an antipasto which was superb, except that they put too many things on the plate which meant that we had very lttle proscuitto.
That really was my only peev.

I had the duck in an Italian wild cherry sauce - extremely good.
My friend had the Pork tenderloin in Port and grape sauce which he said he really liked. When I tasted his pork I was a little disappointed that it wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be, but it was still good with a distinctive sweet/sour flavor.

Lovely sides of rosemary roast tatoes and asparagus steamed perfectly.
(lots of places leave them too hard)

Next time I'm having the tenderloin in pancetta sauce! oy.

No room for dessert.

Fantastic service - really bloody good.
Excellent value for money - even though those entrees are priced between 26 and 40 bucks, I was very impressed with the food, and happy.

Worth the $100 (sans tip) for sure.
Monday-Friday 11:00AM - 11:00PM
Saturday 11:00AM - 1:00AM (!!!!)
Sunday 12:00PM - 9:30PM

This place is pretty new and it appears that they are still working out which items are worth keeping on the menu. Some things that looked interesting are no longer available. We had dinner combos which included entree, rice, jackfruit, and an egg which seemed to be deep fried amd coated with sambal. I had iced tea which was really fragrant and sweet jasmine flavored.

The food is really tasty. Even better it is cheap! My friend and I had dinner for 2 at a grand total of $14.10. Be forewarned, however, as they are a cash only establishment.

I am looking forward to a late night visit to somewhere on the ave that is not falafel or burgers.

Sure......it's on Broadway. Yes, I know that the it's possible that a junkie's exhalants may give you some terrible disease, but this place is worth it.

Get the momos, and the Himalayan Curry. Damned good. I like mine with lamb. Besides being cuter than a cow or chicken, they taste better too.

Both of us have a penchant for Filet Mignon in a gorgonzola sauce - but Assagio's is rather disappointing. Of course the meat is good because it is restaurant grade, but the sauce was disappointing and not to sound cocky but mine is much better. :)

The wines are excellent - in all the price ranges.
Good atmosphere - good service.

This is one of those restaurants that over-seasons their dishes so if you don't want your plate smothered in black pepper tell them while ordering.
(I had to send mine back)

Cin Cin is in Vancouver...but that's just a suberb of Seattle anyway :)

Absolutely Awesome. Busy (on the saturday night we went in February) but the service still remained excellent. This place has a wood fired grill. (I understand the chef uses alder wood for the grill.) I had a filet mignon there which was probably the best I have had for years! NO-ONE until now has been able to simulate the flavour of this grill that my uncle back in Siena used to have. It was awesome. It took me back to leafy autumns in Tuscany (where my family are from)...with all the aromas from the cooking of my family...

I can't praise this place enough. If you go to Vancouver, you have to eat here. You will spend over $100 for two people but it's bloody worth every penny. Fantastic. This is the type of restaurant I dream about owning. (but then I think of the work...)

French Onion soup - they messed that one up pretty well. It needed more garlic, broth, white wine and brandy added - they must have stinged on the alcochol. (Mine is much better - seriously)

My salad was very disappointing - spinach goats cheese, surrounded by very unripe sliced tomatoes. Very stingy on the goats cheese (a small lump in the center of the salad was all I was permitted apparently).

Tiny lemon sorbet palate-washers came unbidden in between hors d'euves and entrees which were nice.

I ordered the seafood dish - a mixture of scallops, shrimp in a lime-cream sauce. The sauce tasted great but it didn't coat the food well as it was too runny.
The scallops were tough stringy and therefore overcooked and the shrimpies were tough little bastards.

My husband had the steak and dungeoness crab in Bearnaise sauce...the sauces were very disappointing in his.

Dessert - chocolate mousee - but the smallest mousse in a wine glass (it didn't even go half glass) for us to share - two mouthfuls each and it was gone - what an overpriced snotty restaurant!

I really left feeling like we had just thrown $100 down the drain - how disappointing.

We were the only people in the restaurant and still service wasn't as attentive as it could have been. When asked how the food was I said "not good" and the waiter didn't bother to ask why, but I told him anyway. ;)
Hmm. If someone were to say, "Andrew, since I missed your birthday last week, I want to take you to three really enjoyable meals!", where would I go?

1) Bamboo Garden. I love that place. No doubt. Daniel is gone, but the guy with the odd facial hair is still there, and it tastes just as good as it ever did.

2) Wasabi Bistro. I know, I know.......it's not the best sushi in Seattle, but I enjoy it there the most.

3) Hmmmmmmmm... I'll have to think about this one.

Boasted as Fremont's only Indian restaurant.
We ordered Chicken Tikka Marsala & Chicken Korma.
Minced beef Nan, side salad and raita.
Two glasses of Covey Run Riesling.

Lovely decor and ambience.
It was a sunday night so therefore quiet, and service was excellent.
My Tikka Marsala was a tad too tomato-ey for me - and I had ordered it medium.

The sauce wasn't very spicey at all however - medium should be somewhat mouthburning but in a mellow way. The chickenmeat was very good quality. Some americans may find the meat portion a tad stingy though - we thought it was just right (being european).

My husbands Korma was very good.

The wines are cheap and our total bill only came to $39 including wine.

It was a good experience.

3/10

I'm afraid service is very important to me - sometimes as important as the food. A poor waiting attitude can easily ruin a whole evening as the manager managed to do to our evening at this restaurant.

It began when we ordered the wine. I asked if the riesling on the menu was a sweet or dry riesling. I was told by the manager that it was "not sweet but off-dry".
I ordered a red wine instead, but my husband ordered the riesling as he doesn't mind the dry ones. (i can't stomach acidic whites)

We were brought our wines and ordered our food. My husband's riesling was really sweet. So I asked if I could swap the red for the sweet riesling.
The waiter who yurned out to be the manager, was very defensive and argued that by "off-dry" he meant it was sweet but not as sweet as a dessert wine. (!)
Off dry (to me) means not even as sweet as a medium to me - dryer than a sauvignon blanc basically. But he was so rude and argumentative (we would have been happy to pay for the extra wine too!) that we were quite put out. Eventually he stomped off and replaced the wine after much argument.
He later served us our food without making eye contact and shoving the dishes onto the table like a sulky schoolchild.

I went to ask one of the lwaiters if I could speak to the manager but it turned out to be him! I had no recourse to complain but I did tell him that we would like a different waiter and he told us we couldn't have one.

That manager needs therapy man. omg - he was one of the nastiest waiting staff I have ever met.

The food was ok but not as good as the prices promised.
The same goes for the wine. The other night I ordered a ChateauNeuf du Pape here - it should have been one of the better yet reasonably prices wines on the menu and yet it had the taste of sour cherries and little body.

My husband ordered the Schweinerschnitzel whilst I had the Bleu cheeseburger.
My burger was good - but I've had better.
My husband's Pork schnitzel's breadcrumbs were on the soggy side, and his red cabbage was unflavourful - not a hint of warm spice nor apples in it whatsoever - so pretty disappointing for a $14 dish.

We left never to return. No tip for asshole manager also.

This could be a great resource for restaurant reviews on the web.

Basically the idea is that we post a new topic for each restaurant, and then those who visit the restaurant and wish to write a review, can do so adding to the thread.

And we need more people on here.

The way to do that is to do a people search for people who "cooking" "cuisine" "food" and "seattle" in their profiles, and then send them all invites.

Guess I'll set the ball rolling with a few restaurants.
btw - I was brought up in a restaurant specializing in Northern Italian and French cuisine. My father is from Siena and ran restaurants his whole life (in the UK).
